Telford's giant ducks raise £20,000 at charity auction
Giant ducks that were put up in Ironbridge and Telford as part of the borough's 50th birthday celebration have been sold at auction for £20,000.
Bidders went quackers for the stars of the art trail which went under the hammer for charity yesterday.
Ten giant ducks, which were originally on show in Ironbridge as part of the Let's Go Quackers trail and then at Southwater, were auctioned off to raise funds for charity, along with seven miniatures.
Donations while the ducks were on displays raised £10,426, meaning more than £30,000 will now be split between Severn Hospice and the Jayne Sargent Foundation.
Despite being for charity, the ducks have been damaged several times, both in Ironbridge and after their move to Southwater.
Artists
A spate of incidents left two of the Let’s Go Quackers exhibits damaged while on display in Ironbridge and there were further incidents at Southwater.
The colourful collection was designed by school pupils, community groups and artists who took part in a competition which attracted 700 entrants.
The best 10 were used to create the exhibition.
Volunteers have since taken part in street collections to give shoppers an opportunity to donate cash to the project.
Viewing took place from 5pm to 7pm and the bidding started at 7.30pm with auctioneer Nigel P. Davis.
The evening featured a performance by the Telford and District Light Operatic Players.
