People in Telford are being warned to be vigilant about companies offering to reduce their council tax bills.

Telford & Wrekin Council's customer service team tweeted that people may be contacted about changing their council tax banding – for a fee.

But, they warned, the service is available for free through the Government's Valuation Office Agency.

After a valuation, there is also a chance that council tax may go up.

The council's customer service team tweeted: "Please be vigilant of companies offering to reduce your Council Tax bill and banding for a fee.

"If you think your property banding is incorrect, you can do this directly through the Valuation Office Agency without any charge. Telford & Wrekin Council are not carrying out these calls."

They said any calls should be reported to police through 101. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or at crimestoppers-uk.org
