'Legendary' figure in legal circles celebrates 50 years as a Shropshire lawyer
A renowned and "legendary" figure in legal circles has been surprised by colleagues as he celebrates 50 years of being a Shropshire solicitor.
John McMillan, who once attempted to prosecute an MP for damaging a mace in the House of Commons, has spent the last half decade working as a solicitor in Shropshire, primarily as a criminal defence lawyer.
Over the years, John, who continues to practice at WMB Law in Madeley, has represented tens of thousands of people who have been before the county's courts.
On Friday, his law firm surprised the 76-year-old with a party, to celebrate his contribution to law over the last half a century.
Described as "legendary" by his colleagues, John, who was born and raised in Glasgow, began his career in the early seventies after moving to Newcastle.
He said: "I started by working life at customs and excise and I thought I'd be scaling the sides of ships to confiscate contraband but I found myself just shuffling papers."
Disillusioned, John said after "a few drinks" in the pub one night, he decided to go and study law, and after graduating found himself working in Shropshire, where has stayed for the last 50 years.
"I've represented tens of thousands of people," he said. "But I don't keep score of the outcomes, What is important is that I do the best job I can."
