Barrow 1618 CofE Free School, nestled between Broseley and Much Wenlock, was given a £700,000 Government grant to improve its heating system and install an additional 65kw solar panel system to add to its current set-up.

The significant investment has enabled the school to enhance its energy efficiency and was provided as part of the Government’s condition improvement fund to support academies.

The funding has been spent on upgrading the school's heating infrastructure to ensure a warmer and more comfortable learning environment for pupils and staff.

The installation of the 65kw solar panel system and battery storage will also help the school to reduce its carbon footprint, alongside promoting renewable energy use.

"We are incredibly excited to be able to make these improvements," said headteacher Ms Anita Ward.

"Our school is committed to providing a holistic learning experience, and part of that means instilling a sense of environmental responsibility in our students. By reducing our carbon footprint and increasing our energy efficiency, we’re leading by example and showing our pupils how they can make a positive difference in the world."

As part of Barrow 1618 CofE Free School's outdoor learning and environmental education, the new solar panels will also serve as a practical learning tool.

The solar expansion is a natural extension of the school’s existing system, and pupils will have the opportunity to explore renewable energy first-hand and gain insights into the science behind solar power and energy conservation.

Ms Ward added: "We believe in empowering our children to be the change-makers of tomorrow.

"These upgrades will support that mission by giving our pupils the opportunity to learn about green technologies in a real-world context."
