Iron Bridge restoration: Iconic landmark finally under wraps
Shropshire’s iconic Iron Bridge is finally all wrapped up – just in time for Christmas.
English Heritage has finished building the plastic shell surrounding the bridge, which has been put in place to protect it against the elements while restoration work is done.
The cover is expected to stay in place for most of the next year while conservation work continues. It is the single largest project carried out by English Heritage to date.
And while visitors will have to do without the spectacular views of the bridge throughout the coming months, there will be a chance to take part in tours showing the work as it goes on.
Councillor Nicola Lowery, ward member for the Ironbridge Gorge, said: “As the ward member for the Gorge I have reiterated the importance of minimising the disruption during the works to the contractor Taziker Industrial Ltd and English Heritage who have both worked very positively with the local community. In addition to this, hard hat tours will begin in the new year which will provide a fascinating opportunity for residents and visitors to explore the intricacies of the project and structure.
“The Iron Bridge is an iconic symbol of the Industrial Revolution. and the pioneering single-span cast-iron structure was a turning point in British design and cemented the Gorge’s position as an industrial powerhouse.The construction of this bridge marked a pivotal moment not just for Britain, but for the world.
“It stands as a testament to the people who built it, as it is still here after 240 years and it is our duty to conserve it so that it can be continue to inspire us now and for future generations.”
