Newport school to shut for local elections

Newport Infant School and the Noah's Ark Nursery will be closed for the day amid concerns that student safety could not be guaranteed.

In a letter sent out to parents, headteacher Chris Pierce said: "I am writing to inform you that the local authority have taken the decision to use our schools as a polling station in the local elections.

"Following a discussion with the Telford & Wrekin team and the school governors we feel that it would not be safe to have the pupils in scool during that day as we could not guarantee their safety with members of the public accessing our site.

"We have therefore reluctantly had to take the decision to close th school to pupils on that day."

Mrs Pierce said she had recommended alternative venues in the area for future elections and said they have promised to investigate them.

"I know that single days can be difficult to manage if you are a working parent and I apologise for any inconvenience that the arrangements cause," Mrs Pierce said.

The school will re-open as usual on May 3.
