The tractor toppled onto its side on the A41 near Mere Park Garden Centre at around 11.30am and led to at least six hours of traffic disruption.

Nobody was seriously injured in the crash and the road remained open at first, despite the tractor blocking half the road, with traffic passing the scene single file in the southbound lane.

However according to the AA the road was closed at 3pm, between the A518 Mere Park roundabout and the A519 roundabout next to the rugby club, and was still shut at 5pm.

Traffic was already extremely heavy on the bypass and nearby roads before the road was shut, while many streets through the town became gridlocked as people sought alternative routes.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said they were called to the scene by police at 11.30am.

One ambulance attended and paramedics assessed one patient - a man who had suffered minor injuries but did not need hospital treatment.

Meanwhile there were delays on the A5 after a crash between a lorry and a car at Dobbies Roundabout on the edge of Shrewsbury, not far from where a collapsed manhole was causing disruption on the A49.
