Wellington Post Office up for sale after weeks of closure
A post office branch hit by a spate of recent closures has been put up for sale for nearly £90,000.
The Post Office had said that it was working with a temporary postmaster to reopen the site in Market Street, Wellington, Telford, as soon as possible after being shut on and off since January 22.
In the weeks since, businesses have said the lack of a post office has been hurting their bottom lines because people were going elsewhere to do what they needed to do.
The Post Office said there had been staffing issues at the branch which caused it to shut for the final time on January 30.
But now the entire franchise has appeared on a business sales website.
The asking price is £89,950, and the seller claims £90,000 is made each year from the range of Post Office services.
Rent for the premises costs £15,500 per year.
Shelia Tipster, a Post Office spokeswoman, said they were looking to reopen the site as soon as possible.
She said: “We are working with a temporary postmaster to restore a service to the store as soon as possible.
"We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused by the branch not being open as we understand and appreciate how much communities rely on our services.”
Councillor Lee Carter, who represents the College ward in Wellington and is Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet member for commercial services, said the post office was a vital service for people who live in the area.
"The closure has affected footfall in the town which has meant other shop owners have suffered," he said.
"We are all aware the frustration is building as it's declining residents of a good service that they rely on."
