Clifton Cinema demolition reveals evocative image of seating from its glory days

Work to demolish an historic Wellington cinema has broken through the walls to reveal the seats where people used to enjoy the films of the day.

What happened on the back rows of The Clifton cinema will remain in the memories of those who were there from the 1930s to the building's final closure 11 years ago.

But for a brief while cinema-goers will be able to reminisce just a little more before the whole building is but a pile of rubble.

After closing in 1987 the Clifton was was later re-purposed as a shop before it closed in 2012.

In March 2021, Telford Investments Ltd, based in Oakengates, was given permission to change the existing retail unit into seven units including external modifications, the creation of a car park and associated works.

Planning documents in at the time said there is almost nothing remaining of the interior since it was converted to retail use in the 1980s.
