Wolverhampton Grand in Brassed Off cast appeal

Wolverhampton Grand Theatre chiefs are giving people the chance to tread the boards in an upcoming production of Brassed Off.

They are looking to cast around 10 people for speaking parts as well as creating their own brass band.

Brassed Off is the Grand's first in-house show for more than four decades and performers are now sought after to work alongside professionals.

The in-house production of Brassed Off, which will run from August 23 to September 2, follows a £1.2million refurbishment in September, whilst the pantomime smashed previous box office records.

The drama will feature ‘a community cast who will appear in a variety of speaking and non-speaking roles alongside high-profile professional actors' which will be announced in due course.

Based on a true story, the story is a funny and life-affirming tale of community spirit and triumph in the face of adversity.

Set in 1992, Danny’s lifelong ambition to lead Grimley Colliery Band to the National Brass Band Competition at the Royal Albert Hall looks like it might finally happen, but as Grimley pit faces closure, the future looks bleak as the town is thrown into conflict.

The Grand are hoping to cast parts for the roles of Jim and Harry, working class Yorkshire miners in their 40s and Vera and Rita, best friends and wives of Jim and Harry, also in their 40s.

They are also looking to cast for children, aged 7-9, to play the parts of Phil and Sandra’s young children - there is no dialogue for these role but they are still considered important.

Additionally, the production requires a supporting cast (male and female of mixed ages) from the West Midlands community to play assorted roles such as Miner’s Wives on the picket line, male bailiffs and miners.

They are also seeking members to make up the brass band, including a cornet, trombone, tuber, tenor horns and percussion.

All members need to be grade 5 standard and ideally should send video footage to casting@grandtheatre.co.uk.

Rehearsals will begin week commencing July 31 in Wolverhampton.

Auditions will be held at Newhampton Arts Centre on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2, April.
