The Mercedes E-Class has been named the safest car on sale in 2024, according to results produced by Euro NCAP.

The German executive saloon was praised for its excellent overall performance scoring 92 per cent for adult occupant protection, 90 per cent for child protection, 84 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and 87 per cent for its safety assist technologies.

Among the list of safest vehicles were Mazda’s CX-80 SUV, the Skoda Superb, the Volkswagen Passat and the Zeekr X.

With SUVs dominating the market, Euro NCAP found that the Chinese Zeekr X was the safest in this category, closely followed by the Deepal S07, Porsche Macan, Cupra Tavascan, MG HS, Toyota CH-R, Volvo EX30 and the Xpeng G6.

The Mazda CX-80 achieved the safest seven-seater with six cars tested in this category – with Audi’s Q6 e-tron closely following behind the Mazda’s victory.

Meanwhile, the Skoda Superb and Volkswagen Passat both achieved the crown for the safest large family car category.

Dr. Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general at Euro NCAP said, “The automotive industry had a challenging year in 2024 marked by weak consumer confidence and difficult economic conditions. Given these difficulties, Euro NCAP finds it especially encouraging that car makers continue to place significant emphasis on safety innovation and equipping cars with the newest safety systems. This firmly places consumer safety at the forefront of automobile design, as it ought to be.”
