Mr Kawczynski denied that he pressuring a young researcher to go on a date with a businessman who was "older than her father".

He is alleged to have approached the woman in 2013 on behalf of a contact from overseas who had seen her in Parliament.

Mr Kawczynski has vowed to clear his name and is calling for the investigation to be finished as quickly as possible.

"A third party has referred this incident, it is being investigated and I'm very much hoping that there will be some sort of adjudication on this as quickly as possible because clearly it's a very, very difficult time for those who've been caught up in this," he said.

Mr Kawczynski warned against a witch hunt in Parliament, warning that it could destroy lives.

"I remember very clearly what happened to the Welsh Assembly member when he was accused of inpropriety and wasn't aware of what he was being accused of," he said. "He took his own life.

"This isn't the only one to take his life under these extraordinarily difficult circumstances and I think when we're dealing with these things, which create a tsunami in your private life, I think it's very important to ensure that although they face justice and are investigated, that there is sensitivity shown, because you are innocent in this country until you are proven guilty."
