The Tories are defending a large majority in Montgomeryshire but there are four other candidates who say it is time to vote for change.

Here all five candidates present their mini manifestos.

Glyn Davies

Glyn Davies - Conservative

It has been a wonderful privilege to serve as Member of Parliament for Montgomeryshire. The constituency is my home, always has been and always will be. Throughout my life, I’ve done all I can to defend Montgomeryshire’s interests, champion her people and protect her wondrous landscapes. I will always be thankful to the voters of Montgomeryshire for electing me. I have much more to give and am ready to continue representing you with single-minded determination.

I am a strong, effective MP who will continue to give serious, honest representation. For many years I have been committed to having as many health services located at Shrewsbury rather than at Telford or even further away. I hope to see an agreement that the new Emergency Centre will be built at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Jane Dodds

Jane Dodds - Liberal Democrat

I live in Welshpool with my husband and am a child protection social worker. I am involved in my local church and a trustee of the local family centre. Montgomeryshire needs a hardworking and energetic Member of Parliament who will improve our services and hold Powys County Council to account. We need a focus on health services leading to an increase in the number of GPs, and an Urgent Health Centre open 16 hours a day.

We need to hold the Conservatives to account in leaving the EU. Our farmers need to have not a penny less than they do now, and we need to do our utmost to stay in the single market. Our health services will start to collapse as we leave the EU and there are no guarantees for our doctors and nurses from the EU to stay in the UK.

Aled Morgan Hughes

Aled Morgan Hughes - Plaid Cymru

The status quo Westminster parties are failing us in Montgomeryshire. Year after year we’re treated as an afterthought – with our services dwindling and communities facing a crisis. The Brexit negotiations pose a real threat for us. The Tories’ Hard Brexit is likely to hit our farmers, towns and villages hard here in Montgomeryshire. A vote for Plaid Cymru would send a clear message to Westminster that we’re fed up of being ignored.

A strong team of Plaid Cymru MPs would fight tooth and nail for the best deal for Wales, whilst opposing the vicious Tory cuts. I’m a Montgomeryshire man through and through. A young, enthusiastic, yet also firm voice for Montgomeryshire in Westminster – rather than Westminster’s voice in Montgomeryshire.

Richard Chaloner

Richard Chaloner - Wales Green Party

I have become increasingly concerned about the damage being done to the lives of ordinary people, and to the environment, by the policies of the current government. I have a commitment to the region in terms of its prosperity, local services and the protection of our environment. Montgomeryshire is an area where the agricultural industry is the mainstay of the economy, and where the effects of climate change will be felt early and will be far reaching.

We also face particular social and economic challenges, for instance in terms of access to health services, education and employment for young people. I will fight for the interests of Montgomeryshire and for a sustainable future.

Iwan Wyn Jones

Iwan Wyn Jones - Labour

The people of Montgomeryshire have a clear choice. Five more years of austerity or a fairer, better Britain led by Jeremy Corbyn. The austerity cuts by the Tories have resulted in wages being 10 per cent down compared to 2007; that accounts to households being on average of £1,400 worse off each year. The Conservative plan has failed Britain, we cannot allow this to continue. Britain needs change.

What saddens me is that myself and 900,000 others in this county are on a zero hour contracts. These exploitative contracts are unfair on the worker. Businesses can dictate when we work and for how many hours each day. That’s why I’m standing for the people of Montgomeryshire, standing up for working people
