Telford & Wrekin Council gets tougher on developments in new Local Plan
Developers will have to abide by stricter rules and green spaces will be protected after a new planning document was passed by Telford & Wrekin Council.
Council bosses today said that its new Local Plan would help keep the town's unique selling point intact – combining big town life while still retaining a rural feel.
It would make the authority among the first councils in the country to have adopted its Local Plan.
The decision will enable the council to determine how and where development will take place in the borough and guide future planning decisions up until 2031.
Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for housing, said the plans would help people feel more confident about where development could happen in the town.
"This is the plan for the town until 2031 and it identifies areas for commercial activities, industrial estates and house building, so people know where the houses will be built in the town," he said.
"It stops speculative development, which we have to keep trying to bat away through the planning committee.
"The council is going further with our Green Guarantee, which has already protected over 100 green spaces with more to come, but also in the Local Plan there are local nature reserves, other green areas, to show developers where they can develop the town. It's great news for Telford."
The Government is aiming for every area in England to have an adopted local plan.
