As part of the £320,000 Newport Enterprise Package which will see changes to roads across the town, Water Lane is lined up for a £33,400 one-way conversion.

The money will come from developers through Section 106 agreements and Telford & Wrekin Council's capital programme.

Newport and District Civic Society have responded to the council's proposal, asking for clarification on some issues and strongly criticising the Water Lane portion of the plans.

An email to the council from Peter Chadwick of the society says: "In the absence of any background information members were unable to see any logic in this proposal and were strongly critical.

"Comments included that the proposal would divert more traffic to the High Street with the current parking outside Lloyd’s bank already causing a bottle neck; at present traffic flows well along Water Lane with the only recent inhibition being cars parked on Water Lane who can no longer find car parking spaces on the existing car parks; the current exit from Water Lane opposite the Shell garage is already difficult at peak times with heavy traffic not only both ways on the road but also traffic exiting the garage."
