Three lanes were closed northbound between junction 10 for Wolverhampton and junction 10a for the M54 link for a period.

The crash happened at around 7.35am leaving traffic queuing back towards junction 7 at Great Barr.

Delays of up to 50 minutes were reported on the stretch.

Highways England say stranded vehicles came to rest 'side-on' in the carriageway.

Traffic officers were sent to the scene.

Officials urged people to allow plenty of extra journey time.

It is thought a lorry and a car were involved in the smash.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said the car suffered damage on the driver's side.

A woman, aged 56 who was the driver of the car, was being treated at the scene.

Details of her injuries were unclear at this stage.

A Highways England spokesman added: "We're reported delays of 48 minutes over normal journey times and recording about seven miles of congestion.

"Both of those vehicles will need to be recovered."

The route had been cleared completely after 9am.
