Work to remove an 800 ton, 250ft long bridge, north of Stafford, is taking place, meaning the section between Junction 14 for Stafford and 15 for Stoke-on-Trent will be closed in both directions for up to 24 hours from 8pm.
With Wolves playing Manchester United at 3pm, fans are being urged to prepare for delays. A club spokesman said supporters were being updated on the situation.
A club spokesman said: "A reminder to supporters travelling to and from Manchester that the M6 will be closed between J14 and J15 from 8pm."
The bridge will be dismantled and the entire 150-tonne centre section lifted clear and taken away in one piece on a 90ft long specialist transporter to a nearby compound.
