Birmingham Airport: Dozens of flights cancelled due to air traffic control fault
Air passengers were plunged into fresh chaos after Birmingham Airport suspended flights for up to two hours.
Birmingham Airport said it had to temporarily suspend services on Sunday evening due to 'an air traffic control fault'.
The incident came in the same week as the Gatwick Airport problems, which saw roughly 140,000 passengers affected when a drone was apparently spotted around the runway, forcing bosses to ground flights across three days.
The airport was able to resolve the IT fault by around 8pm.
Around 12 flights due to arrive in Birmingham including services from Glasgow, Belfast and Edinburgh were cancelled.
A further 20 due to depart the airport also had to be cancelled in the chaos.
More than 50 other flights faced delays arriving with disruption expected to last into the early hours of Monday.
Four flights departing Birmingham including to Geneva and Aberdeen faced delays.
A Birmingham Airport spokesman said: "We thank passengers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience this has caused."
Flights were affected from around 6pm.
The airport spokesman said IT technicians had worked on the problem and believed it was "not too serious".
A Birmingham Airport spokesman had earlier advised passengers to check with their airline regarding flight departures and arrivals.
"We apologise for the inconvenience this is causing to our passengers," an airport spokesman added earlier in the evening.
