Shrewsbury roadworks on track despite gas leaks delay

Upgrades to a road in Shrewsbury are progressing well - despite setbacks caused by gas leaks.

Belmont and Town Walls are currently subject to a programme of works as part of the £12 million Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package.

Residents have been concerned that the work is taking longer than it should and that it is causing early morning disruption.

But Gary Parton, Shropshire Council’s senior network manager, said: “There have been a series of recent gas escapes on this route – which have needed to be dealt with on an emergency basis by contractors working for Cadent.

“The subsequent repairs are temporary and, as a council, we are in liaison with Cadent to effect permanent repairs to ensure work is completed to an agreed standard.

“Unfortunately the recent spate of emergency gas leaks and escapes, coinciding with the already ongoing works on this route, have led to some unavoidable delays and amendments to the current improvement scheme.

“As a result, while works are still continuing on a daily basis and progress is good, there may need to be some amendment to the agreed programme, in order to better co-ordinate with any reactive gas works programme.”

Under government legislation, roadworks can be carried out on residential streets between 7am and 8pm Monday to Friday and 9am-8pm on the weekends and public holidays.
