Kingsland Bridge costs 20p to cross, 15p more than the cheapest, Swinford Bridge in Oxfordshire.

The research was carried out by insurance comparison site GoCompare.

Kingsland Bridge was 10p from 1985 before doubling in price in 2011 to help towards maintenance and repairs. The owners decided not to increase it to 30p a year later despite government approval.

GoCompare's research also found that the M6 Toll (£6.70), Dartford Crossing (£2.50) and the Mersey Gateway (£2) are the dearest toll roads in the country.

It found that keyworkers account for 22 per cent of the working population and many are still commuting via Britain's main roads to get to work each day.

With the vaccine continuing to roll out, freedom of movement is set to increase. As the roads get busier and traffic starts to build, many Brits are likely to opt for the more stress-free route of quieter toll roads.
