At a recent Bayston Hill Parish Council meeting, Councillor Clare Shaw presented a number of ideas that the Road Safety Working Group has come up with.

On the A49, a recommendation has been made for a mobile speed enforcement van to be placed in the Compasses layby or a larger layby towards the Condover junction, like the ones used further down the trunk road in Dorrington. The alternatives are for an average speed check camera and signs, or a fixed speed enforcement camera.

Other recommendations include having a second crossing by the Compasses Inn pub, cutting back hedges, particularly between Burgs Lane and The Common, and adding elderly/children crossing signs along the A49.

The comments will now be sent to the officers currently working on the A49, or a meeting will be arranged with them.

With regards to speed-activated signs, the main priority according to the working group is to have one placed on the downhill carriageway of Lyth Hill Road, followed by one on Lythwood Road, by Castle Road. Other options include having one on the A49 if National Highways does not instigate other speed enforcements, and a new 20mph sign outside Oakmeadow CofE Primary School at set times.

The clerk has been tasked to bring three quotes to full council for selection and approval.

Meanwhile, recommendations have also been made for the following roads:

Pulley Lane/Overdale Road/Lansdowne Road junction

Have a stop sign at the top of Pulley Lane to join the junction, and a stop sign at Gorse Lane. Alternative is to repaint the main roundabout circle as it’s currently worn.

Lythwood Road

Proposal to make a 20mph protection zone around the school, for one hour at drop-off and pick-up, with signage and flashing school zone signs.

Lansdowne Road

Proposal to extend and increase the double yellow lines around Lansdowne Road by the Oakmeadow School entrance and around the top of Green Lane.

Proposal to extend the zigzags around the school, on one side or both sides of the road.

Proposal of a new zebra crossing at the school entrance.

Lyth Hill Road

Proposal to extend double yellow lines around the Cornwall Drive junction. Currently, it’s a blind junction due to parked cars and dangerous for those exiting Cornwall Drive.

Proposal to write to the nursery highlighting again the issues regarding parents speeding up and down Lyth Hill Road at pick-up and drop-off times, as picked up during local community speed watch.

Mention again the need for a stop line at the junction with Lythwood Road.

A meeting will now be requested with Shropshire Council’s highways departments to consider the recommendations.
