Letter - Bikes are a menace
Is anyone else frustrated by cyclists who weave in and out of traffic in Shrewsbury, damaging cars and cutting up motorists?
Last night I was in stationary traffic in Smithfield Road when a cyclist hit the back of my car with considerable force. He put a large dent in the boot of the car and scratched the rear side panel causing substantial and expensive damage.
When I asked for his details or if he was insured he simply told me I would have to pay for the repairs myself as he would have to pay to repair his cycle if it was damaged.
This is going to cost me hundreds to repair or I will have to claim on my insurance which will put up my premium. Either way a cost which is totally unfair due to someone else's carelessness.
This is not the first time I have had to pay for damage to my car caused by cyclists, the last one broke the nearside mirror when he shot past me to cycle through a red light.
Why do they think the law does not apply to them and they should not be held responsible for the damage they cause?
I am sure if I had hit him he would have claimed substantial damage from my insurance.
