Letter: Independents offer better shopping experience
In the present economic climate there have been a lot of letters and articles urging the people of Shrewsbury to use the independent shops or we will lose them.
This is our experience of buying a double bed.
An advert in the paper said a certain shop was having a £1.5 million sale. So, always looking for a bargain, off we went.
We managed to get 6ft into the shop before being set upon by the salesman. We told him that we were just looking.
But we think he was deaf, because he kept following us around the bed department.
We stopped to look at one bed. He told us that it was reduced from £1,200 to £600 but today we could purchase it for only £500.
What a complete load of rubbish I said, and left the shop.
So up the road to another well-known shop. In the bed department we were set upon again, with the same rubbish about discounts plus, for a short time they are waiving the £38 delivery cost. So out we walked.
My wife said let's try the shop in town. We parked the car by the side of the Abbey (three hours' free parking) and went over the bridge into town.
We opened the door to the shop which shook and banged, just like the old shops.
We had a good look around before a man came and asked did we need any help. We told him what we were looking for and received good advice. He left us to go away and price up the three different beds that we were interested in.
At this stage I said to the wife this is going to cost us.
When he returned he gave us the prices for a divan with two draws. What a shock we had, it was a little cheaper than the so-called discounted beds that we had seen. He went away again to let us think about it. After calling for him we said what bed we wanted to buy.
It was delivered when agreed, assembled in our bedroom and all the rubbish taken away for free. Well done to the independents. We will use them again.
