Letter: Supermarkets hurt town centre trade

If you want to see what happens to a town when they get one of these supermarkets just outside the town centre, go and have a look at Market Drayton.

As you go into the town you will notice a hotel shut and boarded up and most of the shops are either up for sale or to let. It does not get better as you go round the road – most are for sale or to let.

But Morrisons just on the edge of the town is packed while the main street is empty.

This is what will happen to Newport. Most shops will not be able to cope. Even the Co-op would not cope, ask the staff. You may gain 100 jobs or so but you will lose twice that when all the shops shut. Plus who wants a town that is dying?

It's like the NHS – you either fight for your town or you lose it.
