Letter: Thank God for Britain

A recent poll suggests that only a quarter of the population supports our foreign aid budget which amounts to 0.7 per cent of our income.

I agree that we should target the aid much better.

We are bound to feel very angry when we hear of it being diverted into the pockets of rich dictators instead of helping the desperately poor.

It should only be going to countries who can be trusted to use it honestly and are willing to work with us.

But don't think our aid is so generous. Remember that trade with poor countries is so unfairly balanced that we are living off the backs of our slaves.

They work for a few pence a day to produce food and goods for us.

How would you like to live in a shack with no toilet or electricity, walking a few miles to fetch polluted water. Just don't feel so smug about your generosity.

Thank God for this country where you were fortunate enough to be born.
