Letter: Does EU want people to quit smoking?

In recent years the government (and particularly the NHS) have spent millions of pounds in trying encourage people to stop smoking claiming that it costs lives.

True! Smokers are often made to feel like lepers and many would like to give up if they were honest with themselves. I know because I once smoked myself and tried on several occasions to break my addiction, alas to no avail.

Since August 2012, I am pleased to say that I have not smoked a real cigarette and have already saved several hundred pounds. Although I have tried many products, the only successful one was the E-cigarette.

Instead of inhaling the dozens of harmful toxins, you only inhale two ingredients – pure nicotine and water vapour. The nicotine is successful in preventing craving.

Now, the EU in its great wisdom is proposing to ban the E-cigarette within the next couple of years, along with other tobacco replacement alternatives. This begs the usual question, why?

Could it be that such products are that successful in helping people to reduce their dependency on nicotine, that the tobacco industry is beginning to see a dramatic loss in revenue.

It would appear that they do not want you to quit, which makes a mockery of the millions of pounds campaigning to get people to stop. To ensure they can continue addressing peoples nicotine addiction I would not be surprised if the EU subsidised growing tobacco as part of its, Common Agricultural Policy!
