Letter: Hoping to opt out of compulsory organ donation
I live in Wales and I wonder if any of your readers could tell me how I now opt out of the compulsory Organ Donor arrangements?
I have been a card carrying organ donor for more than 20 years – but that was my choice. I am not going to be told by a bunch of clowns what will happen to my guts when I've gone.
What would happen were I to drop off the mortal coil whilst on a shopping trip to Shropshire? Will the Welsh Organ Police drive, sirens blaring, over the border to claim my entrails?
Even more problematic would be the case of an Englishman popping off whilst on a shopping trip to Wales. (Unlikely I know but there must be something here they want.) Stripped of his once vital parts, he would then be shipped back over the border to England whereupon litigation is an almost certain outcome.
Consider the annual number of deaths in Wales and then think about numbers awaiting a transplant. My guess is that there are more deaths than transplant pending cases. So, even if there is no problem in matching blood and other go–no go factors, what will happen to the spares?
Sell the spares in England! Good idea! In the present financial climate making a profit in Wales is a dying art. Not anymore.
I'm going to bequeath my body for anatomical examination to the Human Tissue Authority.
If that means that someone cannot have his eyesight restored using my corneas please try to see your way clear to forgiving me. Also please recognise that I have done my small part in challenging the rise of a police state.
