Letter: Owen did his utmost

One day our grandchildren will ask how anyone in their right mind could stand in the way of a reduction in numbers of a pest which causes more than 25,000 cattle to be slaughtered each year.

In the face of evidence from Ireland and New Zealand a cull hugely reduced the level of bovine TB.

I wouldn't find it easy to answer this question. If the ban on killing badgers was lifted there would still be plenty left, and our breeding herds would not be destroyed.

These herds have often been built up over many years. It is difficult to imagine the anguish suffered by families who watched their herds being incinerated.

Owen Paterson did his best to deal with this issue. He will be missed by many.

It is to be hoped that his successor will continue his example.
