Letter: Politicians on the spot

It's nearly polling day, time to make your mind up if you haven't already. I've not yet after over 70 years, most of which spent close to one party.

What I'm going to look for, both nationally and locally, is not particularly what they say, but what they don't say. How do they answer our questions by quoting facts and figures or by giving meaningful answers showing how we shall be affected?

Are they really interested in us and our needs or just on gaining our vote?

What will they promise us? Can they actually deliver a promise or should they more realistically promise to do their utmost to try to deliver our needs?

What will they do to keep up with us? Will they visit and be available to all or be seen only when they next stand or only visit their own party supporters?

Shall we know how to contact them and get a satisfactory reply from them, not someone they employ? I'm still awaiting a reply from a minister from mid-December 2014. It was acknowledged and passed to a department, though I asked for his answer as I knew the facts and figures.

Are they there to serve us or are we there just to vote for them and pay them?
