Letter: A reflection on motorists
Now that spring has finally arrived I thought it prudent to review how well motorists coped with the difficult winter driving conditions.
Gone was the practice of tailgating as motorists kept a good safe distance from the vehicle in front to avoid dazzling the other with their headlights, to avoid their own windscreen being splattered with road grime and to leave plenty of room for braking on a slippery road surface.
Hard acceleration, late braking and corner speeds were reduced as motorists took note of limited road grip and possible frost lurking in shaded areas beneath bridges and under trees where the warmth of the sun had failed to penetrate.
Vehicles showed good illumination and drove further out from the kerb to avoid splashing pedestrians with puddle water. Other drivers cosseted in their warm dry vehicles courteously allowed pedestrians out in the cold and rain to cross the road to get to shelter sooner.
Those who had thought ahead were prepared with winter tyres obtained during the summer and already fitted to a spare set of wheel rims in case of need. If only!
