Letter: Building rail links

While cities are looking to expand their rail network what of county towns like Shrewsbury? Is there a case for rail and station re-openings?

The latter may be more feasible.

Many towns have grown rapidly since the closures of the 1960s providing scope for rail links from large commuter villages and suburbs to be reinstated.

This could be reinforced by park and ride facilities.

Lines radiating from Shrewsbury provide opportunities in this respect but are unlikely to be exploited by train operators.

Bids must be put to the Government as is done in cities like Manchester for grants or loans. Sometimes building companies can be persuaded to contribute if developments are near to rail corridors and planning consent favours it.

Counties like Shropshire should not be left out of the drive to expand rail links.
