Letter: Isolation is not the answer to our future

With reference to the imminent in/out referendum. Most of the arguments concern our short term economic position or problems with migration.

Immigration scaremongering is easily fuelled by the current crisis in Syria which is causing very serious problems in mainland Europe. The easiest choice is to respond to these problems by getting out.

But we should also consider the long view and the prospects for future generations in this country and elsewhere. Western Europe has been at peace for 70 years and benefited hugely from cooperation and free trade.

Spreading peace and prosperity from this nucleus of developed countries is a moral duty, it may cost the participants a little financially in the short term but will pay dividends in the long run, maybe not for this generation but what about our children? It isn't easy and the EU is flawed and needs to improve, but Brexit is not the answer.

It's time to take a long term civilized view, spend more on peace than war and persevere with the problems. The European project is stalled but the problems can be solved if we work together. This planet has the potential to be sustainable, we have amazing technology developing all the time and the ability to feed everyone if we can overcome self interest and corruption.

This is not the time for isolationism, it's time to cooperate and work together for a better future. Just think where we could be in another 70 years if we work together.
