Letter: Democracy is a winner

Owen Smith, candidate for leadership of the Labour Party, gives us a clear and inequivalent indication of the brand of politics he will be introducing in Westminster should he be elected.

Published

He vows to fight tooth and nail to keep us in the EU.

Smith declares that we, the majority who voted to leave are wrong and that he is indeed right.

He is a dangerous man to have on the political scene at this time.

Smith is just 46 years old, born May 2, 1970 – just three years before we joined the Common Market.

He has never known any other political rule but that of Brussels.

He does not know that democracy meant something when we ruled ourselves.

Smith does not appreciate that if we voted on anything the majority won the day – no ifs or buts – that is how true democracy works.

Owen Smith, like millions around his age who voted 'stay' know only the European Union sham of democracy.

The secret meetings behind closed doors, a Parliament that cannot make laws and an unelected leadership with immunity from prosecution.

Sadly, this is the brand of democracy Owen Smith is promoting – EU democracy which allows you to vote, but then compels you to keep voting until you get it right on their terms.

You will note that Owen Smith never mentions national sovereignty.

That is the system which allows countries to rule themselves.

It is a system which the EU does not recognise.

The system which few who voted 'stay' seem to have any knowledge of even though we fought two world wars to keep it so.
