Letter: Correct A&E decision
It is indeed unfortunate that either of the A&E departments in Shropshire, either at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, or, Princess Royal has to close, but, as the only option put forward by Future Fit is to retain it in Shrewsbury along with the women and children's care centre I concur.
The Future Fit programme board also decided that Shrewsbury is the better location of the two, and when you take into account the massive growth of Telford, which mainly contains endless roads and a collection of roundabouts that is a challenge. There is also the incorrect figure quoted regarding the so-called larger population of Telford.
This is also confusing the issue, when the majority of it is made up of already established villages, and other towns which the Telford councillors decided to include in its postcode.
Shrewsbury has to be the obvious choice as it is not only the county town, but in real numbers being central to the county, covers a much larger area, if you will, just compare the two, Shrewsbury and Telford being compared to London and Birmingham, Shrewsbury/London being the capital, and Telford/Birmingham the second city, and though Telford has grown since its first beginnings, Shrewsbury on the other hand has been around since the time of William I, but the first charter now in existence is that of Richard I, 'The Lionheart', from 1199, so I advise Telford to try and walk before it attempts to run.
