Free speech with limited disruption
Jake Williams’s recent letter to this paper accused me of having undemocratic sentiments towards the EDL.
If he had read my letter with more care he would have to acknowledge that I didn’t state that the race hate organisation should be banned but that their rally should be sited away from Wellington Town Centre.
This is allowing for free speech whilst limiting the disruption and loss of business to our traders, the expense of extensive policing and the hurt to innocent centre users who have hate-filled invectives hurled against them simply for having a different skin complexion or particular religious beliefs.
It is with relief that I find that their advertised return to Wellington has been cancelled for July at least, and I agree with Jake that this is hopefully because they had such a torrid time with few local supporters to listen to their drink-fuelled hate.
