'Interference' claim as angry Robb quits

Brian Robb has ended his eight year association with Shrewsbury Amateur Boxing Club - and cited interference as the reason behind his decision.

Robb, a professional during his time in the ring, has resigned his position as head coach.

And he has revealed a glut of the club's champion boxers have also followed him through the exit door.

"For the last few weeks, there has been interference from the committee and some of the assistant coaches," said Robb.

"There can only be one head coach and they have to be the person making the main decisions on the boxing side of things. The committee are there to run the club side.

"Things have been going on behind my back which should have been sorted out in the gym."

Robb has claimed that Dan Cartwright, Tony Jones and Des and Simon Bowater are amongst the boxers who have left the gym to retain the coaching services of Robb.

"We are looking for premises somewhere in Shropshire to set another club up," added Robb.

"For now we are going to be boxing out of Chelmsley Wood ABC in Birmingham."

During his eight years with Shrewsbury, Robb has helped produce 16 Midlands champions, seven national semi-finalists and guided Tony Jones to two national finals.

Shane Enright, who hasn't been in the ring for more than two years, was the jewel in Robb's crown having won three national titles, a hat-trick of Four Nations crowns and boxed in the World Junior Championships for Great Britain.

But Shrewsbury ABC vice chairman Con McGeehan insists the club will progress, with a meeting scheduled for next week to appoint a new head coach.

"Like all good coaches, Brian is very dictatorial and has to have things his own way," he said.

"As a committee we wanted to put down some restrictions to limit his total authority on the gym.

"We wish Brian all the best. Some boxers have moved on and we are mainly left with juniors - but that is where you get your future champions."
