Liam set to make England boxing debut

Shropshire boxing gets another England international on Friday when schoolboy star Liam Davies makes his first appearance for his country, writes MIKE LOCKLEY.

The reigning national champ faces the best Scotland and Wales have to offer at under 39 kilos when he competes in the Three Nations championships, held in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. The winner of the home international will face Ireland's best boxer.

It's an honour not unexpected for the Donnington ABC fighter, who has lost one of only 15 contests this season. Overall, he's won 30 of 36 bouts.

Davies, son of pro prospect Tristan, has earned the same rave reviews as stand-out county internationals Richie Woodhall, John Humphreys and Mark Elliott received during their schoolboy careers. It remains to be seen if he can be just as successful as a senior.

Liam said: "I'm very excited — I just want to get in the ring and get on with it."

As one of the most experienced members of the England squad, Liam will start a warm favourite to lift the title.

Donnington boss Brian Davies said: "In tournaments like this, anything can happen. But, on paper, Liam stands a very good chance."
