Former world heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno will be returning to the ring in Wellington at a special charity showcase next week.

Telford Amateur Boxing Club is putting on its first show in more than 10 years at The Whitehouse Hotel in the town on May 23, with Bruno appearing as a guest of honour.

Sue Hedges, of Telford Amateur Boxing Club, said: "The club has not put on a show in over a decade but with the support of a local businessman has been able to organise a fantastic night of amateur boxing at Telford United Football Club that will include Frank Bruno as a guest of honour.

"This is a momentous night for the club that will really put us on the map.

"At the same time it will benefit a great local cause because any profits on the night will be split between the boxing club and the Severn Hospice."

The volunteer-run club has been in existence since 1972 and is a not-for-profit organisation.

"None of this would have been possible without the support of Simon Hume who has arranged the hospitality side of the show and underwritten all of the costs to make this night possible, a great event for Telford ABC and for the local boxing community," added Mrs Hedges, whose husband Andy is a coach at the club.

"We are hoping that both the club and the hospice will get about £1,000 each if all goes to plan."

There are still tickets available for the event.
