Darrell, who was in action on home territory, overcome Shrewsbury ABC's Sam Adjepong in the 81-86kgs category open to boxers with less than 10 contests to their name. Darrell dominated the first two rounds on Friday night before Adjepong – who was short of sharpness after his training schedules was recently disrupted by the birth of a baby boy –attempted to turn the bout on its head with a strong finish which saw him rock the home boxer. "Lee panicked a bit when he got caught late on, but he boxed very well for two-and-a-half rounds," said Donnington coach Tristan Davies.
Of the rest of the Donnington contingent big-punching Alex Bloomer also progressed in the over 91kgs category, out-pointing Rugeley's Ian Rawson.
But there was disappointment for Matty Ellis who went out at 67-71kgs, losing on points to Priory Park's Ryan Partridge.
A busy weekend for Shrewsbury ABC continued in Birmingham at the first stage of The Championships for Young People on Saturday.
And there was double delight with both Lenny Evans and Dillon Robb coming out on top.
Evans saw off Wednesbury's Dale Doody at 52-54kgs.
The Shropshire boxer was well on top in the opening two rounds, but an overhand right from Doody in the final round put the outcome back in the melting point.
Evans was forced to survive a standing count but eventually clung on to earn a majority verdict.
Robb, who boxes at 57-60kgs, saw off Birmingham ABC's M Taquees with two and three punch contributions breaking the resistance of his rivals.
"We are absolutely over the moon with the progress Dillon is making in such a short time. If he carries on as he is doing we could have another Midlands champion in the making," said Shrewsbury ABC head coach Dave Robb.
