Telford Athletic runners Dean Blythe and Claire Martin were the big winners at the autumn Gym Mostyn Row-a-Run.

They took first place in the men and women's competitions respectively, which were both held at Wrekin College.

The event, which combines a 3,000m indoor row with a 3,000m run, was the second of its kind held by Telford-based athletics club Gym Mostyn, following a successful inaugural event in the summer.

A total of 18 competitors tackled the competition, which was contested in sunny weather.

In the men's contest, Blythe pipped his Telford AC colleague Marc Christian to win the race in a time of 23 minutes 34 seconds with Lilleshall's Ian Laverie coming in third.

In the women's race, multiple-time cross country champion Martin, competing in her first Row-A-Run, ran an excellent 3,000m leg to take the gold ahead of newcomer Charlotte Norcliffe.

Ultra-distance event competitor Deb Hugh came home in third place. The Under-18 category was won by Harriet Blythe.

Event organiser Jim Mostyn was delighted with the turn-out and is planning two new events next year as a result.

He said: "It was successful. It is a new sport and more people are showing an interest.

"We would have had about 30 or 40 people taking part in the last one but there were other road races taking place on the same day.

"But we are going to do another one in spring and then again next summer before next year's autumn Row-a-Run, so there will be three next year."
