A second hole-in-one comes 30 years on

Keen golfer Elizabeth Kenyon rolled back the years when she aced the 12th hole at Lilleshall Golf Club.

Because it was the second time she had done so – her previous hole-in-one coming almost exactly 31 years ago.

And it proved costly, as Kenyon had to honour a promise made while the ball was in-flight and treat her club-mates to a day out.

The Lilleshall Hall Golf Club member was playing in the Dot Gray Brooch competition at the time, alongside friends Jill Preece and Ruth Belcher.

Despite her astonishment at sinking a hole in one at the 167-yard 12th, she was able to hold her nerve and claim the overall victory.

But it came at some cost to Kenyon, who was so sure her tee shot would not find the hole that she made her friends an instant promise.

She said: "I clipped it off the tee and straight away thought 'I've hit that quite nicely.' "Jill told me 'that looks a bit tasty,' but I wasn't sure as it curved off around the back.

"So without a care I said to them, 'if that goes in, a hole in one, I'll take you both on holiday.' We walked up and found it and the first thing they said to me was, 'where are we going then?'"

Kenyon, from Derrington in Staffordshire, had to regather her composure quickly while her clubmates were competing and admitted that she found it tough.

But the pensioner, who is in her 70s, managed to stay focused and collected the brooch, donated by former captain Dot Gray, after shooting a winning net score of 78.

The 17-handicapper admitted: "I had to calm down a bit. Others were still going, but I could barely hit it afterwards.

"My arms were so stiff, so to win was great. It was a good night at the club afterwards because it is tradition to put up a bottle of whisky so there was free Grouse all round.

"We all got home rather late in the end!"

Kenyon's double ace at Lilleshall Hall has left a number of fellow players looking at her with envy.

She said: "I've been a member at the club for 40 years. It was almost exactly 31 years ago that I shot a hole in one at the 12th, so to do it again is mad.

"It's not one of the nicest holes on the course. It's a par three but quite a dangerous par three – renowned by local players. Ruth had never seen one before, so that was really nice for her.

"A lot of the guys at the club were wondering how on earth I can do it twice, when they have never had one.

"I've agreed to take the girls on a spa day, but the Chase club in Penkridge have offered us lunch and spa day there with an hour's tuition, so that will be wonderful."
