Chadd makes history for Len Woodhall club

By Sunday, the 16-year-old was entering the first round of the revived National Association of Girls & Boys Championships in Coventry.

That already made him the first fighter to represent the club in a competitive contest, although Josh Henny boxed skills bouts last month.

And a personal milestone was to follow for the Ludlow School pupil, when he claimed area honours in a national competition for the first time.

Woodfield has reached Midlands finals in the England Schoolboys and Junior championships, but has come up short in the deciding fight.

This time a revenge mission was successful against Birmingham City's Hakeem Ali-Hussain, who beat him on a Ludlow club show two weeks ago.

Colin said: "I didn't actually realise until after the bout, when Brian Robb from the club asked us if we knew we'd made history with the first bout and title under the new name.

"It's all happened very quickly, but we are delighted to have done our bit for Len's memory. He's the reason that a lot of the coaches in this area first got into the sport.

"I grew up with Brian, Richie Woodhall and Len and I boxed for Telford ABC as a lad. I came away from it before going to Ludlow five years ago.

"I took Chadd there with me and he only took it up for more fitness, initially, as he was in the Under-1o football team at Onny Eagles. He doesn't play at all now!

"We couldn't have asked for a better start. Everyone went home happy. I'm a proud father, Chadd was chuffed with himself and the club are over the moon."

The Woodfields, who live in Corvedale, will now be preparing at their new training base at the Venue in Hills Lane, Madeley, for his next NAGBC bout.

The West Midlands champion will return to the Standard Triumph Social Club in Coventry on Sunday November 8 to meet his East Midlands counterpart. He's at 66kg in Class B, for boxers born in 1999.

It was fastest to the punch stuff against Ali-Hussain, who beat him on a split decision last time, as he turned the table on the Brummie by unanimous points decision.

Colin said: "Chadd normally has a height advantage, but this lad is actually slightly taller than him. He tries to get in close and smother your work.

"It was important to box behind the jab and keep his opponent at long range. He was that little bit quicker and sharper this time."

Wellington Boxing Academy's Husan Hussain will join him for the clash against the East Midlands, with a bye at 48kg in Class B.

Namesake and club-mate Hamza Hussain still has to box a West Midlands final on Sunday, against Bulkington's Leonard Hughes at 52kg in Class A (2000).

Joining him at the old Marston Stadium in Hinckley will be Wellington's Idris Mohammed, who tackles Stoke Staffs' David Stacey at 70kg in Class B.

Mohammed, an England Junior area titlist earlier this year, defeated Worcester City's Jay Attwood unanimously at the Coventry venue last weekend to progress.
