The youngsters turned out at Welford Road before watching Tigers beat Treviso in the European Champions Cup in front of a near-20,000 crowd.

Shrewsbury played in a qualifying round for the Prima Cup in October but did not progress, writes Stuart Dunn.

However, they were then picked out of the 64 teams which missed out to compete for the Prima Shield. Their first game at Welford Road saw Shrewsbury play out a 2-2 draw against Hinckley.

Good defence from John Innes slowed the Leicestershire side and although Hinckley were first to score, Shrewsbury levelled.

Angus McKelvie's counter-rucking set up a turnover and a quick pass sent Tom Brown away. Again Hinckley led, but Matthew Brooks raced away to land an interception try.

Game two saw the Sundorne Castle youngsters beat a bigger Tamworth side 4-0. Lucas Ellam scored twice with McKelvie and Brooks also on the scoresheet.

Coach Stuart Cooke said: "The atmosphere in the stadium was fantastic. The team had an excellent day."
