On this day: The leap year games of 1992

Today marks the latest leap year - and you have to go back all the way to 1992 when our teams in the region last took part in a Saturday February 29 kick-off.

The 1991-92 campaign saw Shrewsbury Town operating at the same level they are today in what is now League One, writes Craig Birch.

But the old Telford United were flying high in the top division of non-league football and were joint third in the Conference going into the day's play.

However, both Shropshire sides were indeed defeated on the day, with both losing on home turf. Town welcomed Leyton Orient to the old Gay Meadow.

It was a double headache for Shrews as they lost captain Mark Blake with a broken collar bone, going off at the break clutching his arm in pain.

The skipper was also transfer-listed, meaning the club couldn't sell him until he was fit again. Striker Carl Griffiths, also up-for-sale, was another starter.

The hosts were 1-0 down after just three minutes when left-back Terry Howard let fly from 25 yards, catching out goalkeeper Ken Hughes at full stretch.

It proved to be the only goal of the same. Griffiths, the team's best goalscorer at the time, had fallen out with manager John Bond but was still being used.

Telford went down 2-0 to Boston United, with boss Gerry Daly berating the 'moaners' among the supporters as they struggled for gates of 1,000 at home.

This result didn't help matters, as Paul Grainger was still with the Bucks in the midst of his on-off £20,000 transfer to Football League side Barnet.

The visiting Pilgrims went ahead after a blunder from Darren Acton in the home goal, spilling Paul Casey's shot for Micky Nesbitt to apply the finish.

Telford huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser that didn't come, before Gary Jones wrapped up the win for Boston with a second goal late on.
