A host of new members made their debut in the 13.1-mile event while others used the run as part of their spring marathon training.

A record number of runners – more than 3,500 – took part in the sell-out meeting.

This year 27 Wreckers took up the challenge on what is a fairly fast course, starting in the town's Stafford Street before heading out into countryside.

The route takes in two steady climbs before returning to Market Square via Victoria Park.

The first Wrekin runner home was Dave Leonard in one hour, 30 minutes and 22 seconds.

He was nearly five minutes ahead of Carl Evans, who clocked 1:35:18 while third club member was Phil Howarth in 1:39:31.

Polly Eccles made a late decision to run and got round in 2:05:11.

She said: "There were a few first-timers and the nervous energy, before the start was palpable.

"All in all, a great day was had by all, especially those who had accomplished their first-half marathon."

Meanwhile, four Wrekin members went through the gears at Silverstone race track.

Amanda Lysons, Jon Shore, Neil Jefferson and Catherine Jefferson all took part in the Silverstone Half.

The first and last two-and-a-half to three miles are on the race track itself, with the rest of the course covering the interior and outer perimeter service roads and paths.

Lysons smashed her two-hour target by nearly six minutes, clocking a course personal best. She said: "I love this race. It's exceptionally well organised with a fabulous medal."
