In the end, Shrewsbury won 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out after it ended 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, Wesolowski's 25-yarder on the hour cancelling out John Cofie's stunner two minutes after the break.
Town, who started with a 3-4-1-2 formation, handed debuts to Scottish trialist Jamie Hamill at right wing-back and Elliot Grandin in the hole, behind strikers Scott Vernon and Ethan Jones.
