The 12-year-old from Alveley, near Bridgnorth, brushed off a crash and a poor qualifying position,

writes James Driver-Fisher.

He finished second and third in MiniGP140 event but, vitally, moved up a place in the Mini GP UK championships series following round five at Lydd Circuit in Kent.

The UK version of the championships are run by his father, Richard, within the Mini GP 140 series but are only for youngsters racing on IMR machinery.

Both championships are open for nine to 14-year-olds. Harris now sits second overall in the GP series.

He continues to close the points gap on the championship leader as the season reaches the halfway stage.

Richard said: "Harris was running in the top three during a wet Saturday practice and in the top two on a drying track on the Sunday morning.

"He finally qualified a disappointing seventh on the grid after falling off during the second timed lap of qualification.

"But he went on to finish the overall MiniGP 140 race one in second and race two in third.

"But in MiniGPUK classification he finished race one in first and race two in second, giving him his first overall first place, with Kyal Tinker in second and Corey Tinker in third.

"We also have a rider of the round cup awarded to the best rider for that weekend, which was won by Maximus Hardy."

Harris suffered some extremely bad luck during the opening four rounds of both championships, but seemed to have turned the corner having dominated much of the round five race action.

He said: "Harris has suffered some back luck on two of the first four rounds on the Mini GP UK Championship, with mechanical failures or accidents, but is currently running second.

"With five more rounds to go and, hopefully, some better luck there is still all to play for."

Harris currently sits second in the Mini GP UK Championship on 92 points with leader Lewis Jones on 113 points.

The 10-round season on 140cc bikes takes place on outdoor karting tracks across the country. The next round is at Whilton Mill in Daventry on July 9-10.
