Telford's Dan Preston relishing Tamworth return

The AFC Telford centre-back has started in superb form, named man of the match in Tuesday's 0-0 draw at FC United of Manchester after impressing in the opening-day 1-0 reverse against AFC Fylde, writes Tim Nash.

And he is relishing returning to the club he left earlier this summer.

"When the fixtures came out, that was the one I looked for first and am looking forward to the most, so I'm buzzing," said Preston. "I'm looking forward to going back and I'm really up for it – I can't wait for it.

"I left on good terms with the gaffer but I'd love nothing more than to beat them."

Preston will be coming up against his former Telford team-mate Greg Mills – and has given him a firm hands-off warning!

"I still speak to a few of the lads and I've already told Greg to stay away from my side of the pitch!" said the 24-year-old.

"He's probably their main threat and when he's on his day he's not a bad player. We were in the same car school together (at Telford).

"The day I left Tamworth was the day he signed for them. We passed each other in the office – and he was gutted I was leaving!

"We spoke last week and he reckons they've got a good side."

Preston admits he is expecting a mixed reception from the home support at The Lamb.

"There are a few fans I still speak to so they will be OK, but there will always be a section of fans who will have a go," he said.

"But I think they're definitely beatable and they're there for the taking."

The one-time Birmingham City academy graduate is hoping for a good atmosphere at The Lamb – because the noise keeps him on his game.

Last season Preston was part of the meanest defence in National League North, conceding just 45 goals.

"I just love keeping the ball out of the net and I enjoy defending, especially when you're playing at a place like FC United. The atmosphere keeps me on my game and makes me really up for it," he added.

Preston ended Tuesday's game with a changed shirt after his first one was ripped as players from both sides squared up towards the end of the game.

"I've learned to stay away from those situations because I always seem to end up getting booked, but when I saw their staff getting involved I was frustrated," he said.
