Quick work as Telford boxer Simran Kaur, 15, blasts into the semis

Telford boxer Simran Kaur took less than a round to make a big impact at the European Women's Youth and Junior Championships in Turkey.

The 15-year-old's competition debut for England lasted just over a minute yesterday as she overpowered Vivien Valko.

The Hungarian endured two standing counts before the referee waved it off with the bout barely under way.

Kaur powered forward with the left jab and caught Valko clean to the head more than once with the follow-up right.

That brought the first count and when the same punch combination landed flush the second time, the referee had seen enough.

Victory put the two-time national champion, who fights out of Merridale Boxing Club in Wolverhampton, through to Saturday's 46kg semi-finals in the port city of Ordu. an eight-pronged junior weight of

Kaur will tackle Italy's Giulia Alota, who outpointed Ukraine's Olha Shalimova yesterday on a split decision. The final will take place on Monday morning.

Kaur is a schoolgirl at Hadley Learning Community, who honoured her with their Exceptional Student award this year.

She came through a selection camp at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield to secure her place for the Euros.
