David Goodfield bags a brace as GB win tournament
A Shropshire hockey player played a key role in helping Great Britain to win the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup – the first British winners since England in 1984.
David Goodfield scored twice in the final as Bobby Crutchley’s side beat defending champions Australia 4-3 in Malaysia.
As well as the two finalists, India, Malaysia, New Zealand and Japan took part in the competition.
Head coach Crutchley said: “We are thrilled, we put in consistent performances throughout and were rewarded for sticking to the game plan.”
Goodfield played for Telford & Wrekin between 2003 and 2011, progressing through the junior ranks.
Although he now plays for Surbiton, the 23-year-old continues to turn out for Shropshire when commitments allow.
England and Scotland take part in the Hockey World League in London from June 15-25. The event serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2018 World Cup in India.
